Christmas shopping can be stressful at times but browsing through your local markets is a relaxing way to spend the time and a great place to get gift giving inspiration.
Here’s a selection of the great local markets near us.
Coburg Night Market – Makers Lane
Where: Bridges Reserve, Coburg
When: Sat Dec 19 and Sun Dec 20, 10am-3pm or online at coburgnightmarket.com.au until Dec 20
What: Founded by those behind the Queen Victoria Night Market 10 years ago, the Coburg Night Market has become a must-visit for locals. It’s on during the day this year but also online with 40 local artisans and artists selling everything from jewellery to cosmetics to art, food and vintage clothing. Food and drink stands are also there and entry is free. A good few hours out for the whole family.
CERES Makers and Flea Market
Where: CERES Environment Park, Corner Roberts and Stewart Streets, Brunswick East
When: Sat Dec 19 and Sun Dec 20: 10am – 3pm
What: Stress-free Christmas shopping amid stalls of locally handmade, vintage and sustainable gifts. Food, coffee, live music, play areas for the kids and dogs welcome.
Bohemian Bulla Market
Where: Jack McKenzie Hall, 5 Green Street, Bulla
When: Sun Dec 20, 9am to 3pm
What: Enjoy a massage or psychic reading as you search for gifts. Food and drinks available and a lawn to hang out on and listen to music. A large variety of stalls including local handmade products, organic skin products, clothing, jewellery and holistic pet foods.
Coburg Christmas Farmers Market
Where: Coburg primary School, 92 Bell St, Coburg
When: Wed Dec 23, 2pm – 6pm
What: Christmas market for all your fresh food and pantry items for the family table on the big day and the festive season. The regular Coburg Farmers Market is open Sat Dec 19, 8am – 1pm.
North Essendon Village Farmers’ Market
Where: Lincoln Park Essendon
When: Sun Dec 20, 8am – 1pm
What: A great variety of local food direct from the growers.
Flemington Farmers’ Market
Where: Mt Alexander College, 175 Mt Alexander Rd, Flemington
When: Sun Dec 20, 9am – 1pm
What: One of Melbourne’s first and most celebrated weekly farmers’ markets. Incredible showcase of vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, baked goods, fruit and nuts, eggs, pasta, baked goods, bread, honey, oil and dairy and specialty products.
Woodend Farmers market
Where: Forest St, Woodend
When: Sun Dec 20, 9am – 2pm
What: A monthly community-based market that has been running for more than 40 years, featuring craft and vintage stalls.
Riddells Creek Virtual Market
What: Due to the challenges of 2020, this farmers’ market has gone virtual.
