The northern most suburb in the City of Maribyrnong located 5-10km from the Melbourne city centre, the suburb of Maribyrnong is almost entirely surrounded by the Maribyrnong River, which forms its northern, eastern and part of its western boundary.
Formed by the merger of the City of Footscray and parts of the City of Sunshine councils, the addition of housing developments (such as the Edgewater Estate along the Maribyrnong River) has contributed to the population growth of Maribyrnong to just under 77,000 people. The older housing in the area dates from the 1950s and 1960s, but large deposits of land have been recently reclaimed for housing.
Maribyrnong boasts Highpoint City Shopping Centre, one of Australia’s largest shopping centres, and Pipemakers Park, home to Melbourne’s living museum. Locals enjoy several parks and the Medway Gold Club whilst Victoria University’s Student Village is close by.
Residents have several public transport options, with several bus lines servicing the area and easy access to various train and tram lines.
