Welcome to Essendon

Located 10km north-west of the Melbourne CBD, Essendon – Essendon North sits within the municipality of Moonee Valley and is home to almost 20,000 residents. Named after the village of Essendon in Hertfordshire, England, Essendon was on the route to the Castlemaine gold fields, with miners travelling along Mount Alexander Road. A train followed in 1871, with trams linking Essendon to the city from 1906. Excellent public transport links still exist today, with the Essendon, Glenbervie and Strathmore train stations along the Craigieburn line and the number 59 tram offering residents quick and easy access to the Melbourne city centre. The Tullamarine Freeway provides easy access to other areas in Melbourne including Melbourne Airport. Lush and leafy and offering stunning city views from many vantage points, Essendon offers residents a wide choice of architectural styles within family friendly surrounds. Grand Edwardian, classic Victorian and Federation and even Californian Bungalow style homes (around the Mar Lodge estate) occupy large blocks that frame wide tree lined streets. Many modern apartment buildings sit side by side with commercial premises along the main thoroughfares of Keilor Road and Mount Alexander Road. Many residents choose Essendon to raise a family due to the wide selection of excellent schools, both public and private. Schools in Essendon include Ave Maria College (Girls), St. Columba’s College (Girls), St. Bernards (Boys), Penleigh & Essendon Grammar (Co Ed), Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School (Girls) and Buckley Park College as well as Kangan Batman TAFE (Essendon Campus). Essendon offers cyclists and pedestrians enjoyable scenery along the Maribyrnong River Trail and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail. Other parks popular with locals during summer months include Buckley Park, Montgomery Park, Woodlands Park and Cross Keys Reserve. An array of shopping, dining and café options can be found around Essendon North Shopping Village, Essendon station and Napier Street, home to Windy Hill (home of the Essendon Football Club).
